Anyone here know Porsche really well? Like how good the Triptronic was in the 996 Turbo? Like how do they hold up to high millage? Here is the one in question btw. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

I’d go with a manual honestly. I think that was in the days of finnicky SMGs. Solid engine though; a lot of the parts in that engine were carryovers from the aircooled engines (most notably crankcase design). Very clean example though. Looks incredible.

You think it would be decent for track use?

I wouldn’t want to track it. It’s too nice. If I were gonna get a 911 to track, I’d look for an example that wasn’t as nice cosmetically, but flawless mechanically.

I -do- know that it’s not a dual-clutch or automated manual. It’s a standard torque-converter auto. That said, I don’t believe there was anything wrong with them besides that.

I really hated Tiptronic in the Audis. Finicky, stupid, and thought it knew which gear I wanted more than I did. No idea if it’s the same system, but probably related.

As to the car itself, it’s a first-year model with absurdly high mileage. Considering that about anything more in depth than changing the oil requires either removing the fenders or dropping the engine, it could have a lot of maintenance costs down the road. Something to keep in mind. If you do decide to check it, or another, out, I can give you a basic list of things to watch for.

You’ve got it a bit mixed up, I think. The Metzger engine in the 996 and 997.1 turbos was based on the engine from the GT1, which was also liquid cooled.
How much -that- engine had in common with the older air cooled motors, I couldn’t say.

That’s a bit harder at a dealer honestly.

I do know that there is a lot of commonality between the watercooled 996 Turbo engine and the earlier aircooled engines, and that’s why it was so good (proven platform). Idk about them coming from the GT1.
